Jennifer Hurley is a professor of English and nonprofessional sewist. She lives in a 1925 bungalow in Alameda, California, with her husband, chiweenie, and two cats. Though her grandmother was an accomplished dressmaker and tailor, she had never even threaded a sewing machine on her own until the summer of 2012. Now that she’s started, though, she is now obsessed with all things needle and textile. These days she sews primarily on a 1946 Singer Featherweight 221.
